Caterpillar Facts
Did you know that I just found a live caterpillar-just cruising around my house? I named it Katie. Did you know that caterpillars have pinchers for eating? When they are threatened, they curl up in a ball. Their favorite food are lilly leaves. Well, Katie was munching on a carrot instead! They curl up in a ball when they want to sleep. The kind that I found was green, had two rows of spots on its back, had no antennae, had stubby feet like a V, and was blind! Now how could Katie sense or see where she is going? Well she uses the other three senses, touch, smell, and taste. Maybe she has eyes, but they are black, so I can't see them. Maybe they were camouflaged. I'll release her next week, and she will become a beautiful butterfly! Or a moth. Here is a picture of Katie.
Index
pinchers: small jaws on animals, used for eating, or pinching
threatened: scared or hurt
antennae: two small hairlike feelers on the head
camouflaged: disguised in the same color as surroundings

Garage Swamp
My name is Shreyas. I live in a small house in San Jose. It was a sunny day today. My dad had said that our garage is creepy. He told me to never go inside. I'll get lost. Well, my dad asked me to fill water in the empty bottles in the car. I got the keys. And as usual my brother followed me. I unlocked the car and got the bottles, but... my brother accidentally turned on the car. We blasted through the garage and into a creepy swamp. I started to drive slower and slower. This was the perfect speed: 5 mph. I turned on the radio. The radio said,"The swamp has lots of animals. Some were not discovered."
"Where are we?" My brother said timidly. I said,"We are in a swamp." We got out of the car. We wandered in the trees. We came to a river. I found some logs floating around. I found out that they were
not logs. "CROCODILE FISH HEADS!" I screamed and we ran out. Soon my brother got tired, so I picked him up and ran. We rested under a leafy tree. Then I saw a lizard as big as a football field. So again we ran. Too bad I couldn't play football on it. While we were running I stepped on an ant as big as a baseball. I thought it was disgusting so we went somewhere else to wash my shoes.
We came to the same river. I looked out for those crocodile thingy. But something surprised me. Barracudas!! "We are toast" I groaned, looking at my brother. For the 3rd time we ran, at full speed to go to the car crying for help. On the way a parrot as tall as the Eifel Tower said,"need help?" But we ignored. We found the car and drove home. Well, to my room then.

My Field Trip
On Friday, July 13 my summer school headed out to Seymuor Marine Center Tide Pools and Natural Bridges for a field trip. We went on a school bus! We also made our own backpacks! It was a one-hour drive so you had to be patient. At first, we went to the aquarium. There was a touch pool! We touched a Tiger Shark! They are harmless to people. They are hairy. I saw a King Crab too! It was about 1 foot wide and long! We saw krill, fish, tiny jellyfish, Blue whale skeleton, otter fur, and souvenirs. Outside the aquarium, there was a beautiful sight of the Pacific Ocean. We spotted dolphins and (mabye porpoises.)
Next, we went to Tide Pools and Natural Bridges. We climbed up a cliff and went downhill to a beach. Next to the beach there was a rocky shore where the tide pools were. I held a hermit crab. That reminded me of the day I held a crab at a reverse tide at Half Moon Bay. I scratched my knee sometimes. We saw rock crabs, barnacles, sea urchins, star fish, and clams. Do you know how tide pools are formed? This is how: When the moon is full, the waves are very high. They go over the rocks. They fill holes in the rock with water and living things move in the water. That's how Tide Pools are made. We went to the beach. I got my shoes dirty with water and dirt.
Then we went hiking on two trails. The first was to another beach and the second was to a scenery. In the scenery there was a beautiful lake with a tiny island in it. There was a family of ducks, a harron, turtle, some fish, and a beautiful white swan. It followed us because people usually feed it bread and it thinks that we have bread to feed. The harron was on the tiny island fluffing its feathers. The fish may have been huge! Its dorsal fin was out of the water like a shark! It was too big for the swan to eat. I saw another group of ducks, a male, female and two ducklings. The ducklings looked ready to fly, make a family and make a home. I think turtles were hiding behind rocks, because I never saw them.
This was a fun field trip I'll never forget!

An Awesome Invention
Hi!
I have thought of a cool idea.
With this invention you could know exactly how good you can write! You'll need:
• a pencil with an eraser on the back
• a rubberband
• 2 wires, + -
• tape
• a motion sensor
Instructions:
2. Put the silver part of the pencil (the thing where the eraser and pencil join) in the space of the two wires and tape them together.
3. On the other side of the wires, put the motion sensor.
Now that you have put together the Awesome Invention,
now you can improve in your writing!

My Pencil Lead Carvings
Carving on pencil leads is very hard! You need to have some tiny tools to carve. They can easily break too! They are very dangerous. You need some help of parents. Also, you need a lot of patience. Here are some shapes that I carved with my dad:
I learned carving the pencil lead from my Nana on my recent visit to Los Angeles(LA).
